Not Your Momma's Book Club


Book Lover’s can rejoice can rejoice as now more than ever they can find their tribe. There are book clubs and podcasts that allow you to connect with authors and readers from around the country. Check out some of our favorite’s below that you might want to check out and be sure to let us know if you have any favorite book clubs or podcasts. 

Well Read Black Girl

Well-Read Black Girl (WRBG) started by Glory Edim connects readers, writers, authors and publishers through her book club and the hashtag #WRBG. The club reads work written by black women and covers all generes. This year, after running a Kickstarter that raised over $39,000,  WRBG held its first annual writers’ conference and  festival which allowed aspiring authors to meet with publishers and agents, readers to hear from their favorite authors as well as had performances and impromptu book signings. S+E founder Charell attended the festival and can attest that it was an amazing experience. 

Black Girl Lit

A podcast that hosted by two millennial black women that discusses books by black women authors. Between podcast discussions of the books they touch on pop culture and current events. Their bonus episodes are great as they pull in commentary from listeners online to drive the conversation and expand the conversation beyond the book of the month.

Literary Swag

Started by Yahdon Israel, Literary Swag book club is for the cool kids. Meetings are held in Brooklyn at the retail store BK Circus and attendees can sip on Yahdon’s MarDusse (Martinelli’s apple juice and Dusse). The books are not limited to black authors. Also, be sure to check out the hashtag #LiterarySwag on Instagram for fun and creative captures of people reading. 

Mocha Girls Read

Mocha Girls Read is for brown girls around the country that love to read. There are local city chapters as well as a Facebook group that allows for in-person or online books discussions. Books are chosen via poll and topics of discussion are brought up throughout the reading. Bonus: they do a great job of letting readers know when books (Amazon and Kindle) go on sale. As a bonus of Black Girl Magic the founder of of the club is also a producer and is producing a Hattie McDaniel biopic
