Dope- NYC Screening

On Thursday, June 4, S&E had the privilege of attending an advance screening for the Sundance Festival hit Dope.

The movie was Dope, Fly, Fresh and every other 90's slang for great you can think of. Created by Rick Famuyiwa, the mastermind behind 90’s classic The Wood, Dope meets and surpasses your expectations. It's funny, street and book smart with the right dash of "hood" realness.

The film follows self-declared nerd Malcolm (Shameik Moore) and his two best friends Diggy (Kiersey Cleemons) and Jib (Tony Revolori) as they struggle to unload a large amount of dope that hilariously falls into their laps, while Malcolm simultaneously is working on his admission essay and interview to Harvard. Malcolm and his friends are outcasts. They love everything 90’s: hip-hop, fashion, video games, etc. and it shows in their clothes and attitude which make them stick out at school and in their Inglewood, California neighborhood. They are book smart and enjoy "white" things like punk rock music and Donald Glover. Their social awkwardness makes their encounters with others, escaping gang members and selling dope nothing less than comical. With a good story that covers relevant topics pertaining to society and personal identity Dope just might be this generation’s new classic, if not a definite favorite.

In addition to new faces we see appearances from Zoe Kravitz, Tyga, Chanel Iman, A$AP Rocky, Rick Fox and more.

The screening was hosted by Angela Yee of Power 105 the Breakfast Club and Tristan "Mack" Wilds. Dope hits theatres June 19th and you’ll definitely want to check it out (trailer below).
