16 Year Old Takes Us to School: Cultural Appropriation

In the light of recent events (i.e. Iggy Azaela, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis) the old subject of cultural appropriation has reared its head again. So many people fail to see the wrong in mass appropriation of a culture, and this expands far beyond the scope of black America. Cultural appropriation includes everything from the wearing of a Hindu bindi as a makeup piece or a Native American headdress as an accessory.

Sixteen year old actress Amandla Stenburg, known for playing Rue in Hunger Games, perfectly explains what cultural appropriation and how it negatively impacts those from the “borrowed” culture when it is not respected and taken for granted. This young lady presents well-structured arguments and examples in a short video for a school project.
